You are in working in the Hospital and then there is an emergency. You understand Spanish but can't speak it and it is taking too long for help to arrive.  You learned Spanish in school but you didn't learn Medical Spanish. What can you do?

Apply the theory

There is no better practice than to practice what you are learning. Working in Healthcare is one of the more satisfying careers but also it is a field where you need to keep up with technology and language trends. Thus, it is critical to keep your skills fresh and up-to-date with training and professional development.

MAKING CONNECTIONS THROUGH LANGUAGE

Working in Healthcare is about working as a team with one goal in common - the well being of our patients. I teach and train healthcare professionals who are working on their Spanish skills as well as Interpreters to develop their communication and language abilities.

  • Medical Spanish: An Overview is a great introductory course. It serves as a refresher for those  who are already working on their Spanish and want to include Medical Spanish.  It is also a great resource as a beginner’s study guide.
  • The eLearning Center- Language Access courses are a combination of resources, e-courses and tutorials to help you develop your language skills so that you can overcome language barriers while providing medical care.
    • Working with Interpreters is a new skill that everybody working in Healthcare needs because not only will enhance your ability to communicate effectively with patients but also it will help you to differentiate between a trained and untrained interpreter.
    • Resources are updated regularly and new courses are added which include advanced courses in Spanish for Interpreters and bilingual Healthcare Professionals.
  • Learning a new language is easier and fun if we do this together:
    • You'll learn how to work with Interpreters and bilingual staff.
    • Also, there is a review of the Title VI of the Civil Rights and Language Access resources (Interpreters and translators).
    • I will teach you how to create a medical glossary to help you build robust and diverse vocabulary. I'll show you techniques on how to work with and without interpreters.
  • Apply the theory. Use what you already know to build a strong language foundation.

"Lupita has a depth of historical knowledge and expertise. She is willing to share her knowledge, both in the classroom and in her daily work. I participated (as a student) in the Medical Terminology class that she taught in 2014. Her enthusiasm for learning and teaching were evident. That class allowed me to see the high regard her students have for Lupita. She is there to help further their knowledge and abilities as interpreters or bilingual staff; by "there" I mean not only in the classroom, but in encounters that take place at work. Lupita is easy going and exudes confidence while; interpreting her presence helps reassure patients and providers alike. She is efficient, a knowledgeable translator who shares her knowledge with others. Her words of encouragement mean a lot to new translators. Idoya E. Colleague and student."
